Five-Factor Inventory

Terms of use

By Maya Renner, Editor · Last updated 30 May 2026

These terms set out the deal between you and this site. They are written to be read, not to be survived. Using the Five-Factor Inventory means you accept them, so if any part does not sit right with you, the simplest answer is not to use the site.

What the site is

The Five-Factor Inventory is a free, browser-based personality test and a set of articles explaining the model behind it. It is offered for personal, non-commercial use, as an educational resource. There is no account, no purchase, and no subscription involved in using it.

It is not professional advice

The results and the writing here are for learning and self-reflection. They are not medical, psychological, legal, or professional advice, and they must not be used to make decisions about treatment, employment, or anything else with real consequences. This point matters enough to have its own page; please read the disclaimer, which forms part of these terms.

Using the site responsibly

You agree to use the site lawfully and not to interfere with how it works for others. In plain terms, that means you will not:

Intellectual property

There are two layers here, and they are worth keeping separate. The questionnaire items come from the International Personality Item Pool and are in the public domain, free for anyone to use. The original material on this site, meaning the trait write-ups, the type descriptions, the articles, the design, and the code, is ours, and you may not republish or sell it without permission. You are entirely free, of course, to share your own result, take a screenshot, or tell a friend what you got. Your result is yours.

No warranty

The site is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. We put real care into accuracy, but we do not guarantee that the content is complete, current, or error-free, nor that the site will always be available, uninterrupted, or free of faults. To the extent the law allows, we exclude implied warranties of this kind. Some consumer-protection laws give you rights that cannot be excluded; nothing here is meant to limit those.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operator is not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, this site or its results, including indirect or consequential loss. Because the result is a self-reflection aid rather than advice, decisions you take after reading it are your own. Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, it is limited to the minimum the law permits.

Links to other sites

Some pages link out to research, definitions, and references held on sites we do not control. Those links are there to let you check our sources. We are not responsible for the content, accuracy, or practices of any external site, and a link is not an endorsement.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the site develops. The current version is always the one on this page, with its date at the top. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand, and any dispute relating to them or to the site falls to the courts of New Zealand, subject to any mandatory consumer rights you have under the law of the country where you live.
